Promising Rianne Malixi starts her bid to play in the magnificent Augusta layout with a decent two-over-par 74 on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila) in the first round of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship at the Champions Retreat Club in Georgia.
The 16-year-old top Pinay amateur shotmaker scored one birdie against three bogeys for a joint 44th, eight strokes behind first-round leader Hannah Darling of Scotland.
Malixi missed seven birdie putts inside eight feet while making a pair of three-putts. She needs to play much better on Thursday (Friday in Manila) to advance to the third round and fulfill her dream of playing at the famous Augusta National.
Only the top 30 players, after two rounds, get to play at Augusta National for the final two rounds.
The 37th world-ranked amateur is the second Filipina golfer to compete in the prestigious tournament after Yuka Saso. Saso, now a professional under the Japanese flag, finished third in the inaugural edition 2019.
In the professional rank, the last Filipino who played at Augusta was Frankie Minoza in the 1991 Masters.
