Big Lagoon proved victory in another prestigious race was no coincidence after conquering the field in the 2023 Philracom Chairman’s Cup on Sunday at the Metro Manila Turf Club in Malvar, Batangas.

Last year’s Presidential Gold Cup champion owned and bred by Melanie Habla topped the 2,000-meter race, beating Don Julio of Engineer Jun Sevilla and previous Philracom Chairman’s Cup winner Boss Emong at the line.

Jockey JA Guce skillfully guided Big Lagoon to triumph in the P2.5-million race where they collected the top prize of P1.5 million. Don Julio’s connections got P500,000 and Boss Emong of KL Morales pocketed P250,000.

Gallopers Robin Hood chased Big Lagoon throughout the lung-busting race and placed fourth followed by Cam From Behind, Ambisioso and Gomezian.

“Congratulations to the winning connections of Big Lagoon as well as to all the participants that made the Philracom Chairman’s Cup a huge success,’’ said Philracom Chairman Reli De Leon.

The Philracom Chairman’s Cup is part of the Triple Cup, a three-leg stakes race including the Philracom Commissioner’s Cup and Classic Cup where the best four-year-old horses and older are showcased.

Also present during the racing spectacle was Games and Amusements Board Chairman Atty. Richard Clarin, whose agency helps the Philracom and MMTCI get rid of illegal bookies and protect legitimate betting operators.

“Once again, we were able to witness an exciting race among the finest gallopers in the land. This is the kind of race that encourages more horse racing fans to continue supporting our races,’’ said De Leon.
