Taguinota siblings make waves in swimming; Muntinlupa City dominates judo in Batang Pinoy

Qatar-based Taguinota siblings — Arvin Naeem and Arabella Naeem – share the spotlight with noted junior record holders in swimming even as Muntinlupa City dominated judo competition in the second day of action in the 2023 Batang Pinoy on Tuesday.

After winning the boys 12 -under 200m Individual medley (2:25.20) on the opening day on Monday at the Teofilo Yldefonso Swimming Center, Arvin Naeem continued to shine by winning the Boys 12 & Under 50m backstroke with an impressive time of 31.15 seconds and the Boys 12 & Under 100m Backstroke clocking one minute and 05.63 seconds in the best time finals format in the medal-rich event in the meet organized by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

The 12-year-old was fresh from a remarkable performance in the Emirates International Swimming Championship in Dubai where he was awarded the Most Outstanding Swimmer (MOS) capturing golds in the 50m, 100m, and 200m backstrokes, 200 Individual Medley, 50m, and 100m free events.

His older sister, 15-year-old Arabella finished second to Kacie Gabrielle Tionko of Negros Oriental (2:32.07) in the girls 13-15 200m IM with a time of 2:31.13. She added a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle (1:01.40) won by FJ Catherine Cruz of Mabalacat City (1:00.92). Tionko finished second at 1:01.07.

Competing for Team Paranaque, World Junior Championship veterans Micaela Jasmine Mojdeh and Heather White won two gold medals each showing their readiness for the coming Asian Age-Group Championship with the country play host in February.

Mojdeh, 17, a Brent International School standout, dominated the girls 16-17 200m Individual Medley in an impressive time of two minutes and 28.18 seconds, beating Lora Amoguis (2:31.04) and Aubrey Tom (2:34.51).

Dubbed the ‘Water Beast’, Mojdeh captured her favorite 50m butterfly before leading Paranaque City along with Vietnam-based Heather White, Julia Ysabelle Basa, and Kiera Macaraig to a golden finish in the girls’ 4x50m medley relay.

Besides the relay triumph, the 16-year-old White delivered in the girls 15-16 100m freestyle event, clocking 58.85 seconds against Trixie Ortiguerra of Tarlac City (1:01.55) and Jie Talosig (1:01.60). Both Mojdeh and White are trained in Bellevue Swimming Academy in California, USA.

Over at the Olympia Community Center in Makati City, Muntinlupa City dominated the judo competition, winning 10 gold and seven bronze medals to propel the City to the top of early standings in the multi-event tourney.

The gold medalists are Samara Vidor, Samiro Vidor, Unice Nacida, Bella Nacida, Prince Parugao Matthew Villaganza, Sophie Nicole Novino, Jonah Duata, Isaiah Miguel, and Miguel Tecson, while the bronze medal winners are Jonas Estrellado, Franchesca Morales, Rhain Dela Cruz, Sam Daniel Guevarra, Mark Lincoln Arnais, Axcel Carlos, and JC Labrador.

In the multi-event competition organized by the Philippine Sports Commission for 17-year-olds, other notable gold medalists included Jamesray Mishael Ajido of Mandaluyong City, triumphing in the Boys’ 13-15 200m IM (2:15.30m) and the Boys’ 13-15 50m Butterfly (25.94s), and Paranaque City’s Michaela Jasmine Mojdeh, who excelled in the Girls’ 16-17 200m IM (2:28.18m) and Girls’ 16-17 50m Butterfly (29.27s).

The taekwondo competition saw the cities of Bacolod and Iloilo earning two golds each, with Ace Sha Oro and Joshua Emmanuel Deita leading in the light heavyweight and light middleweight divisions for Bacolod, and Justin James Diasnes and Shein Nicole De Asis securing golden victories in lightweight and Kyorugi 5th category for Iloilo.

Caloocan City’s Brianna Elyse Cajucom clinched gold in the Individual Kata Female 10-11 years old category, while Davao City secured gold in the Individual Kata Male 12-13 years old class, courtesy of Robert Bryan Dayanan.

In boxing, the Carlo Paalam-coached Cagayan de Oro squad maintained a perfect record, with all 10 boxers advancing to the next round at the Rafael Palma School in Manila. Paalam, a silver medalist in the 2022 Tokyo Olympics and a proud product of Batang Pinoy continues to contribute to the success of the team.
