NAMSAP holds Season 2 of Masters and Seniors Athletics Championships

With this campaign foremost on its mission and vision, the National Masters and Seniors Athletics Association of the Philippines announced the holding of the Second Season of the Philippine Masters Athletics championships slated May 4-5 at the Philsports Track and Field Oval in Pasig City.

No less than Drolly Claravall, president of NAMSAP and a long-time regional director of the National Athletics Association, convinced and invited all Filipino seniors and sports buffs to join the competition supported by 5 Throws-For-All headed by former Justice Secretary Alberto Agra and the Philippine Sports Commission.

“This competition is not just for former athletes. It’s open to all Filipino seniors. Kailangan natin maging malusog kahit na may edad na tayo, and this competition is good for all of us,’ said Claravall, herself set to compete in throwing event.

Over 600 from 20 teams, including former national members, have already registered in the two-day competitions used as qualifying events for the World Masters event.

“I hope we can surpass the number of competitors who joined last year because we are now in our second season. People are more aware of the event now,” said Claravall.

Tournament director Ben Alacar said the event is open to athletes 35 years old and above in the men’s and women’s individual categories, team relay, and mixed-gender team relay categories.

Participants will see action in eight disciplines and 10 age groups such 35-40; 40-45; 50-55, 55-60 and 60-65.

This includes entries from the Philippine Obstacle Sports Federation, the Philippine Army, and the Philippine Air Forces. Local government unit participants also include Nueva Vizcaya, Cagayan Valley, Baguio, Cavite, and Dasmarinas.

Events to be contested are in 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1,500m, 2,000/3,000m steeplechase, 5,000m, 10,000m, 3,000m race walk, 80m hurdles, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles.

The jumping events include the high jump, long jump, and triple jump, while the throwing events will involve the javelin throw, shot put, discus throw, pole vault, and hammer throw.

Team events in the 4x100m relay, 4x100m mixed relay, 4x400m relay, and 4x400m mixed relay will also be held.
