NCR Mayors appeals to implement stricter lockdown; PCII says no to lockdown needed

NCR Mayors appealed to National Government to implement stricter lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19 Delta Variant, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Benhur Abalos said. However, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) said that lockdown may result to “loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs again”.

The Inter‑Agency Task Force announced yesterday, July 28 that Metro Manila is under General Community Quarantine with heightened restrictions from August 1 to August 15 amid the threat of COVID-19 Delta Variant.

In line with OCTA Research Group, Metro Manila is making an average of 1000 news cases of COVID-19 per day.

“Mamaya magmi-meeting kami ng IATF. Haharap ulit ako to petition that… Baka akala niyo nabalewala ‘yan. No. ‘Yan pa rin ang position ng mga mayors,” Abalos said in a phone interview by GMA News Online.

In addition, the PCII disagreed with the OCTA Research Group proposal about a two-week hard lockdown in the country.

“Such a decision will cause the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs again, not to mention business losses of enterprises, which our citizens can ill afford.” PCCI President Edgardo Lacson said.
