HANGZHOU, China – The gold medal remained elusive for Team Philippines as wushu prize fighter Arnel Mandal lost in the men’s sanda 56kgs finals and settled for the silver medal in the 19th Asian Games on Thursday.

The 27-year-old Mandal bowed to Chinese Jiang Haidong, 2-0, sending the small Filipino crowd into tears at the Xiaoshan Guali Sports Centre.

It was the first silver medal for the Philippines following the bronze in the taekwondo poomsae and wushu artistic event. Mandal gave the country a shot at the gold medal after dominating Kyrgyzstan’s Avazbek Amanbekov, 2-0, in the semifinal on Wednesday.
