WBC declares ‘No Contest’ in favor to PH fighter

THE World Boxing Council (WBC) declared ‘No Contest’ the controversial fight between Filipino challenger Jayson Vayson and reigning International Light Flyweight champion Indonesian Tibo Monabesa last February 27 at the Holywings Night Club in Jakarta, Indonesia.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman informed Indonesian Boxing Association president Manahan Situmorang about the decision in a letter dated March 7, 2022, just a week after a ‘review’ of the fight was made by the world boxing governing body.

Sulaiman also instructed the IBA to settle the dispute through ‘rematch’.

“The 10 judges who evaluated the fights during this process scored the fight in favor of the Philippine challenger by a wide margin. The WBC was informed that the panel of officials working the fight live were all local and it was not a neutral one.

“The WBC has decided to declare this fight as No Contest and not recognize the victory of Monabesa. The WBC is hereby ordering a direct rematch for the WBC International Light Flyweight championship,” said Sulaiman.

The WBC also invited the concerned judges, officials, and referees to attend the scheduled Ring Official seminar via Zoom under the WBC University platform.

“Your honorable Commission has the option to accept our ruling and change your records as an NC and notify BoxRec as such, or not accept our decision and keep such fight a victory for Monabesa,” stated in Sulaiman’s letter.

Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Chairman Abraham ‘Baham’ Mitra immediately expressed his sincere acknowledgment of the WBC decision.

“We are happy the WBC is very responsive to our complaints and values fairness. They have a long track record of good deeds and this adds to the list,” said Mitra, the only GAB Chairman to receive the WBC ‘Commission of the Year’ Award twice since assuming the agency’s top post in 2016.

“Tulong-tulong tayo rito. Basta may reklamo at kitang kita naman sa mga impormasyon na agrabyado ang ating Pinoy fighters sa mga desisyon kahit saang world body, ipaglalaban natin yan,” added Mitra, stressing that GAB has a similar protest issue before the World Boxing Association (WBC).

Brico Santig, boxing matchmaker and Vayson manager, recalled that even the crowd and the ring announcer were all disappointed after the Indonesian won via split decision despite that he was knockdown twice by the Filipino challenger in the early going on their 12-round scheduled match.

Before the fight, the 23-year-old Vayson was undefeated in 9 matches, while the veteran Monabesa is sporting a 21-1-2 record with 8 knockouts.
