Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is necessary for the growth, development and repair of all body tissues. It is involved in many body functions, including formation of collagen, absorption of iron, the proper functioning of the immune system, wound healing, and the maintenance of cartilage, bones, and teeth.
Vitamin C also gives our brain and nervous system protection from detrimental effects from stress that a person is dealing through the pandemic.
Neurotransmitters the chemical messengers, Adrenaline (Epinephrine), and Noradrenaline (norepinephrine) functions as stress-signaling hormones and are produced in the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands and central nervous system maintain high levels of vitamin C by means of special cellular pumps, which absorbs the vitamin when the body is deficient.
A combination of vitamin C and zinc makes it an important role in nutrition, immune defense, and maintenance of health. Intake of both is often inadequate, even in affluent populations. With COVID-19 around, a simple case of flu or common cold place a great burden on society in terms of suffering and economic loss.
On the other hand, sodium ascorbate is a form of vitamin C that has sodium components that help lower its acidity levels. The sodium content helps Vitamin C to be easily absorbed and stay longer in the body. It serves as an antioxidant that helps keep your cells from damage and keep them healthy. Sodium ascorbate is needed to maintain the health of skin, cartilage, teeth, bone, and blood vessels. It is also used to protect your body’s cells from damage. Sodium ascorbate functions as a potent antioxidant.
There are many vitamin C and sodium ascorbate brands being sold and distributed by different pharmaceuticals and manufacturers. This is actually good because we have many to choose from.
Interestingly, Zeus Resources, Inc., headed by its CEO JV Calleja, is the distribution and trading partner of its subsidiary COMPACT PHARMACEUTICALS, CORP (CPC), a 45 years old manufacturing company in the Philippines, has launched its new vitamin C and sodium ascorbate products under Health and Beauty Resources (HBR) that are more affordable than other leading brands. Jewel-Zee Plus and Jewel-Cee are introduced to help people get the daily average vitamin C doses that their bodies need, especially during this pandemic.
According to Dr. Don Cua, MD, our body needs vitamin C and we can get it from natural sources like fruits and vegetables. Vitamin C in capsule or tablet form are widely available in the market and its also a good source for those who fail to consume fruits and vegetables.
However, Dr. Cua reminded us that certain body types and age brackets have its equivalent dosage of vitamin C that can be consumed on a daily basis. For adults, the recommended daily amount for vitamin C is 65 to 90 mg a day, and the upper limit is 2,000 mg a day. Although too much dietary vitamin C is unlikely to be harmful, too much intake of vitamin C supplements might also cause diarrhea and nausea. Dr. Cua does not advise for anyone to take megadoses of vitamin C or sodium ascorbate to prevent side effects.
Both in capsule form, Jewel-Zee Plus has 500mg/40mg (vitamin/mineral) per capsule, while Jewel Cee has 562.42mg (mineral) per capsule.
Jewel Zee Plus and Jewel Cee are sold at P6.00 and P4.00, respectively, and are available in Mercury Drug Stores nationwide.
