Based on the South Korean folklore, gumiho, Tale of the Nine Tailed is an interesting and loveable Korean fantasy, love story, and drama series aired on 7th October to 3rd December 2020.

It is clear from the start that this K-drama series is bound for a tragic ending with a lot of sacrifices and rivalry. Tale of the Nine Tailed star Lee Dong Wook as Lee Yeon, the overly zealous guardian mountain spirit who is also an over 1000 years old gumiho – a nine-tailed fox, as the leading character in this fantasy-driven love story drama. Yeon’s love interest Ji-Ah, played by actress Jo Bo-ah, is also the reincarnated version of Ah-eum – a princess in the past life who was possessed by an evil Imoogi – legendary creatures in Korean mythology and folklore that was about to take control the world.

Yeon’s mission is to protect and save Ji-Ah at no cost even if it will sacrifice his own soul. Yeon’s half-human younger brother Rang, played by Kim Bum, became his enemy until Rang finally realized that Yeon was actually his precious possession when he met one of the after-life judges who moonlights as shaman in the human world. Yeon and Rang became family again and fought the other Imoogi inside a human form, Terry, played by Lee Tae-ri.

The season ender featured Yeon and Terry’s death and their tragic fall at the Samdo River.

But of course, Tale of the Nine Tailed would not leave its audience and fans with a really sad ending so they had to bring back Yeon. Rang had to sacrifice his life in order to bring Yeon back to life. It was also a happy ending for Ji-Ah, and the rest of other characters, to see Yeon back but without a price. Yeon came back to life as a human, which he desired after all.

The finale also revealed a plot twist in the final scene when Yeon faced-off with the Spirit of Misfortune which posed a lot of curiosity to Yeon’s real identity. Yeon already told Ji-Ah and his friend Shin Joo, played by Hwang Hee, that he is now human so how come in the ending he fought the Spirit of Misfortune with his magical sword and with a glowing eyes? That we’ll have to find out when Season 2 arrives.

All the other characters in the series have their own spotlights and are all material in the storyline. Ji-Ah’s workmates Kim Sae-rom and Pyo Jae-hwan were also a part of her past life as the princess’ servants. Kim Sae-rom’s played by Jung Yi-Seo. Now if by chance you were wondering who is this actress with this pretty face, I’ll tell you this. Jung Yi-Seo happens to be part of the worldwide K-drama zombie Netflix hit “All of Us Are Dead”. Yi-Seo played the role of Kim Hyeon Ju who was bitten by a mouse carrying the virus and thus started the outbreak at Hyosan High School. Go ahead, rewatch AOUAD one more time.

Aside from Lee Dong Wook, Jo Bo-ah, and Kim Bum, other notable actors who played astonishing performances are Kim Jung-nan, who played Taluipa or Granny; Kim Yong-ji, who played Yu-ri; Jung Si-yul, as Soo-oh; and all the rest of this K-drama series.
