All systems go for the first-ever SMART Philippine Intercollegiate Badminton Championships as the teams and schedule of the tournament has been formalized for this weekend campaign on September 10 and 11 at Centro Atletico in Cubao, Quezon City.
A total eight colleges and universities — four teams from the UAAP, one from NCAA, and three from state colleges and universities — are divided into two groups in the tournament that will follow a mixed team-tie format.
“It was a good response from these universities and colleges that they have decided to join this inaugural tournament. We hope that this could build something in the years to come,” said PBAD vice president Jude Turcuato.
Group A is comprised of the four teams from the UAAP namely University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas, Adamson University, and Ateneo de Manila University, while Group B is composed of NCAA’s San Beda University, and the three SCUs Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Rizal Technological University, and Technological University of the Philippines.
The battle between UAAP rivals UP and Ateneo starts off the tournament at 8 a.m. on Saturday, along with the UST-Adamson tussle in Group A. On the other side, San Beda will take on TUP, while PUP will open its campaign against RTU.
Later in the day, at 1 p.m., UP-Adamson and UST-Ateneo will take place in Group A, as Group B’s San Beda-RTU and PUP-TUP will unfold.
The group phase ends with UP and UST, and Ateneo and Adamson taking on each other in Group A, while San Beda and PUP, and TUP and TUP close the eliminations against each other, on the following day at 8 a.m.
The top two teams from the group stages will face each other in the final at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The tournament is organized by the Philippine Badminton Association, powered by SMART Communications, and supported by the MVP Sports Foundation, Ducksports, and Apacs.
