THE Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) on Friday released a check worth P300,000 as initial financial aid for ailing Olympian and athletics icon Lydia De Vega.

PSC Officer-In-Charge Atty. Guillermo B. Iroy, Jr., said he will immediately recommend the additional cash aid as soon as Malacanang officially names the new PSC Board. So far, bowling legend Olivia ‘Bong’ Coo was the only appointed Commissioner of the agency.

“Naibigay na namin yung cash assistance para ka Diay (Lydia De Vega) thru her daughter Paneng. But when the new Board comes in we will recommend the additional assistance to Lydia,” said Iroy.

The 57-year old former Asia’s ‘Sprint Queen’ and considered one of the most beloved athletes in Philippine history is currently confined at the Makati Medical Center due to complications caused by breast cancer.

Her daughter Paneng, a former collegiate volleyball star, made public the condition of her mother in a post on social media which left the sports-loving Filipino awed, surprised, sad and shocks as the multi-titled sprinter didn’t show any sign of the dreaded disease when she joined her fellow sports greats during the opening ceremony of the 30th Southeast Asian Games in 2019.

The Philippine Olympic Committee, meantime, extends help with a P100,000 medical assistance for De Vega with  POC chief Bambol Tolentino adding another personal contribution of P100,000 for the sports heroine’s hospital needs.

Also, the Olympic body announced the granting of P500,000 million cash bonus for World Games karate gold medalist Junna Tsukii.

Tsukii’s gold, the only medal won by a 10-athlete Team Philippines to the World Games that ended over the weekend in Birmingham, Alabama, was worth P.5 million under POC policy on cash bonuses for athletes winning medals overseas.

“The POC recognizes Junna’s feast with honor, it wasn’t the Olympics but the World Games are that tough a competition,” Tolentino said.

The Philippines now has two gold medals from the World Games with Carlo Biado winning the first one in men’s 9-ball of billiards at the 2017 Wroclaw, Poland, edition.
