WORLD tennis junior sensation Alexandra ‘Alex’ Eala is doubtful to join the Philippine Team in two major multi-event international competition this year.
As she turning professional after a breakthrough US Open junior single title last year, the 17-year-old senior High said the Southeast Asian Games (SEA) scheduled might coincide with tournaments where she plan to play and qualify for the French Open — one of four major tennis Championship in the world.
“I know that it’s around May 6, I think. I would love to represent the Philippines again in the SEA Games. But from what I know, it might interfere with the [qualifiers] of the French Open, and the preparations prior. Let see I must talk with my team regarding this,” Eala said during a press conference on Tuesday organized by sponsoring Globe and BPI at the Globe Tower in Makati City.
The Vietnam SEAG three bronze medal winner (2022) dropped three notches down at No.217 from no. 214 in the Women’s Tennis Association ranking after losing her first-round match with veteran Tatia Maria of Germany in straight set in the WTA Thailand Open in Hua Hinn last month.
“So, I haven’t yet sat down with my team and discussed whether that’s something that’s going to be included in the schedule,” said Eala.
Eala, who just return home for a brief vacation, is taking her chances for her budding professional career as she claimed that she might entangle with the same situation when it comes on her availability for the Philippines’ campaign in the Asian Games in China this September.
“I would love to join the Asian Games. I’ve never competed in that yet. I’ve heard very good stories and very good experiences from other players. But again, we must check if it collides with any of the important tournaments that I plan to join this year,” she added.
As a teenager, Eala said she is limited to play for only 17 tournaments in the WTA year-round program but as she soon hitting her 18th birthday it’s a no limit campaign as she’s eyeing to make it to the Top 150 in the world which is a gargantuan task for the Nadal Academy scholar.
It’s not easy task, indeed, but Globe which been helping Eala’s career since her amateur days and BPI Bank where her mother works as executive are joining forces to extend support to Filipina World tennis champion ‘all the way’.
