GAMES and Amusements Board (GAB) Chairman Abraham ‘Baham’ Mitra boosts the morale of the Filipino pro athletes saying the current situation is ‘temporary setback’ while assuring that the government is ready to lend a helping hand.

“GAB assures pro athletes and officials our full support. We are always ready to assist you despite all the setbacks brought by this pandemic,” said Mitra shortly after meeting the officials of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Thursday.

‘However, may we remind everyone to continually adhere to our public health standards and IATF’s guidelines because we are facing a more contagious Covid-19 variant,” added the former Palawan Governor and Congressman.

Several GAB-sanctioned leagues including the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) have decided to temporary suspend their ongoing conference due to the decision of the IATF to put Metro Manila and nearby provinces to a much stricter Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ). Also, several team crew and members of the Talk ‘NTtext was tested positive in COVID-19.

At the IATF meeting, Mitra informed GAB’s decision to support the temporary suspension of the PBA at the Ynares Center in Pasig City due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases in Metro Manila.

“We support the PBA’s choice to suspend its ongoing conference. We also subscribe to the league’s decision to transfer its venue from Pasig City to Batangas province,” he said.

Meanwhile, after taking a long hiatus, many GAB-sanctioned leagues such as the National Basketball League / Women’s National Basketball League (NBL/ WNBL), the Premier Volleyball League (PVL), the Pilipinas Golf Tournaments Inc. (PGTI), and the VisMin SuperCup with its Mindanao leg, have tried to launch their sports bubbles amidst the challenges brought about by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

However, many of these leagues have decided to put off their games after the imposition of the stricter community quarantine in the National Capital Region and other nearby provinces and cities.

PGTI has decided to postpone its tournaments, the ICTSI Riviera Ladies Challenge on August 4 – 6, and the ICTSI Riviera Ladies Championship on August 11 -13, while the organizers of the NBL and WNBL Season 2021- Senator Pia Cayetano Cup have informed GAB that they have decided to defer their tournaments in the province of Pampanga.

Also, Gabriel ‘Bebot’ Elorde Jr. of Elorde International Promotions moved their scheduled boxing promotions set August 7 at the Flash Ballroom of ESC in Parañaque to October 7.

The PVL and the VisMin Super Cup Mindanao leg have opted to finish their tournaments sans reclassification of quarantine status in the province of Ilocos Norte and Pagadian City, respectively.

Meantime, Mitra thanked the provincial government of Ilocos Norte for hosting the first ever professional volleyball league and for the training bubble of several PBA teams. He also commended the health and safety protocols being undertaken by the province in general and for PVL (PCR and Anti gen upon entry) in Bacarra venue.
