UNDEFEATED boxing rising star Carl Jammes Martin may soon get to see action down South almost a year after his last ring appearance.
The 21-year-old pride of Lagawe, Ifugao (15-0, 14 knockouts) is being groomed to appear in Omega Pro Sports International (OPSI) boxing bubble in Mandaue City, the second boxing event in the province of Cebu since the coronavirus started to wreak havoc in the country early this year.
Martin’s manager and sister Je-iel Martin said they are currently negotiating with OPSI thru its vice president Jerome Calatrava who is putting up two boxing cards on the same day, December 18, inside the International Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (IPI) compound in Mandaue City.
“Hopefully we can reach a deal with them. It’s hard to put up a promotion these days and we’re still lucky OPSI has expressed their willingness to open up a slot for my brother,” said Je-iel whose father, Abel acts as the young boxer’s trainer.
The Martins were planning to make 2020 a big year for the young fighter dubbed “Wonder Boy” by aiming for the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Philippine crown before taking on tough foreign foes in the latter part of the year as preparation for an international stint next year.
The COVID-19 pandemic scuttled those plans but Martin is still upbeat now that he will get to fight before the end of the year.
“I’m still thankful there is an opportunity for me to get a fight this year. I’ve known a lot of boxers who have given up in terms of seeing action this year,” said Martin.
“While we are doing this for our boxers, we also thought of putting up a separate card for other promoters and give their boxers an opportunity to fight. It’s our way of helping the country’s boxing community,” added Calatrava.
Martin’s last fight happened almost a year ago when he scored a smashing 3rd round TKO stoppage win against veteran international campaigner Philip Luis Cuerdo on December 21, 2019 in Manila.
OPSI enjoyed huge success in their initial four-fight bubble boxing card held October 7 inside the IPI gym where all health protocols, from a 15-day quarantine to swab and rapid tests and proper social distancing were strictly enforced.
