Here are the COVID-19 vaccines available in the Philippines

Since the immunization started, millions of Filipinos have already vaccinated against COVID-19. Most of them are health workers, senior citizens, and uniformed personnel.  As of August 8, over 13 million individuals have fully vaccinated, and about 11.4 million have only received the first dose of it.

The Philippines has eight COVID-19 vaccines being used across the country, Sinopharm, Sinovac, Pfizer, Covaxin, Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Sputnik V. All of these are given for free, and their efficacy is in the range of 60-90% against COVID-19 different variants. 

Both Sinopharm and Sinovac vaccines were developed by biopharmaceutical companies in China. Sinopharm was approved by World Health Organization (WHO) this past May, while Sinovac was in June. According to the health authorities, their side effects are fever and fatigue — as they observed to the individuals who have received them.

Pfizer – BioNTech vaccine was made by the Scientists Ugur Sahin and Ozlem Tureci. Based on its Pharmaceutical company, its effectiveness is 95% protection against COVID-19. This vaccine will be allowed to children aged 12 to 15.

Covaxin vaccine is manufactured by Bharat Biotech of India, it is their first indigenous COVID-19 vaccine. On its Phase III clinical trial, it showed 77.8% efficacy against the virus. However, last May, the Philippines received eight million doses of Covaxin.

Johnson & Johnson vaccine was developed by Janssen Vaccines, a biopharmaceutical company in the Netherlands. It is only given by a single shot, unlike other COVID-19 vaccines. Its effectiveness in preventing symptomatic is 66%, while 85% in severe, and 100% in preventing deaths and hospitalization.

Moderna vaccine was introduced by the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA). Base on clinical trials, those who received its doses will have 94.1% protection against the virus.

AstraZeneca vaccine is a UK-based COVID-19 vaccine, as stated on the data given by its manufacture, it is 63% effective to prevent acquiring the virus. And according to the survey, at least 50% efficacious this vaccine is to control the spread of COVID-19 across the world.

Sputnik V vaccine is produced by Gamaleya Research Institute, it has 97.6% efficacy against COVID-19 vaccine. The common side effects of this vaccine are fatigue, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, fever, and vomiting.
