Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chief Danilo ‘Danny’ Lim passed away on Wednesday, January 6, at around 7 am. He was 65. The cause of death is cardiac arrest, a week after contracting COVID-19.

Lim was tested positive for the novel coronavirus after a routine screening as a frontliner. Lim experienced mild symptoms and would go on isolation.

“MMDA Chair Lim served the Duterte Administration with professionalism, competence and integrity. He would be dearly missed,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement.

Lim served MMDA from 2017 when he was appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte. He was among former high-ranking military officials that Duterte tapped to join his administration.

Lim’s death came after news of restrictions from the new COVID-19 strain that was detected in other countries as early as the new year arrived. Lim would be the first known official of the Duterte government to have died in the year 2021.
