INDANG, Cavite – Glyzzel Ann Monsanto and fellow Palaweno runners shone brightest among young cadets vying for pride and honor in the inaugural Reserved Officers Training Corps (ROTC) Games Regional Qualifying Luzon leg on Wednesday at the Cavite State University track oval here.
Already hailed as ‘Sprint’ double champion in the Air Force women’s division after an impressive showing in both the 100m (14.0) and 200m (28.6) dash, the 21-year-old Monsanto completed a golden sweep in athletics event for Fullbright Colleges in Puerto Princesa, Palawan anchoring the team which included Kianah Bonbon, Jean Claire Agawin and Hannah Trisha Viloria to victory in the 4×400-meter relays clocking 05:31.0.
On Tuesday, Monsanto was also at the forefront of Fullbright’s mighty performance in the 4×100-meter relay (1:01.2) to claim the honor as the most bemedaled athlete in the Games so far in the meet brainchild of Senator Francis ‘Tol’ Tolentino and jointly organized by the Department of National Defense (DND) and Commission on Higher Education (CHED) with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) as a major backer.
University of Cagayan Valley’s John Andre Ponce also had a prolific performance in anchoring his squad to victory in the Navy men’s division of the 4×400-meter relays in 3:59.80 in the competition also backed by the Local Government Units (LGU), the Armed Forces of the Philippines and host Tagaytay City government led by Mayor Abraham ‘Bambol’ Tolentino.
Including his wins in the men’s 100 and 200 meters and the squad’s runner-up finish in the men’s 4×100-meter relays, Ponce was the top medalist in the Navy men’s division of the Luzon qualifiers also hosted by Indang City Mayor Perfecto Fidel.
“Sobrang challenging ito para sa amin. Masayang-masaya kami dahil hindi namin ito expected,. Pasalamat kami at hinanda kami ng todo ni coach Socorro (Dasilio),” said Monsanto, a former jumper (long jump and triple jump) during the 2018 and 2019 Palarong Pambansa held in Vigan, Ilocos Sur and Davao City, respectively.
Action in kickboxing event
Online competition in the Mobile Legends-BangBang event, saw Don Honorio Ventura State University claim the gold in the Philippine Army class, while Batangas State University finished second and Colegio de Amore shared the bronze with PLT College, Inc. In the Philippine Navy class, the University of Cagayan Valley took the gold while the Maritime Academy of Asia and Pacific claimed the silver. Tanauan Institute Inc., claimed the gold medal in the Philippine Airforce class, while the Philippine State College of Aeronautics took the silver and Perpetual Help and Asian College of Aeronautics shared the bronze medal.
Meantime, action continues in women’s volleyball at the CAVSU gymnasium with TSU defeated MMSU, 25-3, 25-5, 25-10; GCST won over DHVSU, 25-14, 25-20, 25-18; BSUN d. KCFF, 25-19, 22-25, 25-9, 25-19; ASTI d. PCU, 25-20, 25-23, 25-17; BASC d. UNP, 25-5, 25-18, 25-10; SLSU d. BC, 25-21, 25-14, 22-25, 25-16; LSPU d. SSCR, 25-12, 25-6, 25-13; PLSP d. Competition in boxing and arnis full-contact padded stick also started on Wednesday with the Finals set on Friday. Over at the Tagaytay Combat Center, kickboxing event also resumes its preliminary rounds.
