COVID-19 cases declining to single-digit daily rise in Italy

0 0

For the first time, Italy has reported single-digit cases on a daily basis, the lowest since the beginning of the outbreak in early March, bringing the country’s death toll to 34,716.

But the authorities are not sitting on their laurels. Experts worry that the start of the summer season and return of Italians traveling to holiday sites, could spark a second wave of contagion.

Recoveries continued to climb to 188,584 with more patients leaving the intensive care.

Schools will reopen, after more than six months of closure, on September 14, said the Italian government announced last week.

The announcement came after a long and difficult negotiation between the central government, regional authorities, and school principals, who complained about the lack of direction and the long delay in setting guidelines on how to guarantee social distance and safety rules in Italy’s usually overcrowded classes.

The government guidelines, which will be applied in a flexible way and on regional basis, include rules to divide classes into various learning groups, staggered entry into schools, and openings for lessons on Saturdays.

The government also earmarked an additional fund of €1 billion, aimed at hiring 50,000 extra teachers and auxiliary staff.
