CHESS never stops even during the pandemic.

In fact, the Philippine Executive Chess Association (PECA), Rotary Club of Nuvali and Chooks-to-Go have again joined hands to organize the 4th Chooks-to-Go National Rapid Chess Championships on July 9-11 via Tornelo.

PECA president Dr. Fred Paez said the three-day fund-raising tournament will benefit not only the participants in all seven categories, but the local chess community as well.

“We believe in the Filipino chess players. We know we can really excel in the international stage in both over-the-board and online chess competitions” said Paez during the “Usapang Sports on Air” by the Tabloids Organization in Philippine Sports (TOPS) via Zoom yesterday.

“Even our sponsor, Mr.  Ronald Mascarinas of Bounty Agro Ventures, Inc. (BAVI), which produces Chooks-to-Go, believes that Filipino chess players can excel,” explained Paez, who appeared in the weekly forum together with Rotary Club of Nuvali president Sam Balboa.

“This is actually our fourth year organizing tge tournament. But unlike the first three editions which were held in Laguna, Muntinlupa and Pasay over the board, we’ll do it now online due to the pandemic,” added Paez in the forum sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), PAGCOR and Games and Amusements Board (GAB).

Paez, who also manages PCAP All-Filipino champion Laguna Heroes, takes pride in putting up a total cash prize of P500,000 in the tournament.

“Even compared to cash prizes of regular over-the-board comperitions, this is the biggest in recent years courtesy of Chooks-to-Go. Malaking tulong ito sa mga players natin, lalo ngayong may pandemic,” explained Paez.

Paez said top players, led by GMs Rogelio Barcenilla Jr. , Mark Paragua and Oliver Barbosa,  will lead the participants in the Open division.  Also in the early list of participants are former Asian junior champion IM Ricardo de Guzman, IM Barlo Nadera, FM David Elorta, FM Nelson Mariano III, FM Randy Segarra, NM Glennen Artuz, AGM Dandel Fernandez, AGM Henry Lopez and Roel Abelgas.
