Every September, the Philippines celebrates National Bamboo Month. For Base Bahay Foundation, Inc. (BASE), bamboo is more than a month-long celebration, but a lifelong commitment. Through innovative building technologies, BASE is developing and scaling regenerative and future-ready solutions that can transform the way we build structures and communities.
With the increasing climate challenges and a widening gap in affordable housing, there is a growing urgency for a sustainable solution. BASE’s Cement-Bamboo Frame Technology (CBFT) utilizes bamboo as a main structural component, transforming it from fast-growing grass into a durable and environment-friendly alternative to traditional building materials. This building solution reduces environmental impact while generating local livelihood, developing a sustainable value chain from farm to foundation.
While bamboo research and innovation continue with the support of the local and international partners of the BASE Innovation Center, its growing recognition also highlights the urgent need for a framework to ensure its safe and effective use in construction.
This September, in time with the celebration of the Structural Engineering Month, BASE and the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines (ASEP) officially launched and started the rollout of the “Philippine Guidelines on Bamboo Design and Construction” during the 64th Founding Anniversary celebration of ASEP last September 25. The publication, now available for purchase through ASEP, marks a significant step in positioning the Philippines at the forefront of global bamboo construction, driving forward sustainable and innovative building practices in the country.
During his message on the official launch and rollout of the guidelines, ASEP’s former president (2024-2025), Dr. Lessandro Garciano, emphasized the potential of bamboo and the important role of structural engineers in integrating this regenerative material into safe and sustainable structures.
“Let us no longer see bamboo as the ‘material of the poor,’ but as the material of the future. With your expertise as structural engineers, and with clear guidelines to guide us, we can build a future where our structures are not only strong and safe, but also sustainable, local, and proudly Filipino.”
Echoing this call, BASE General Manager, Engr. Luis Felipe Lopez highlighted in the published guideline the importance of rethinking local materials in construction.
“This is also a call for all the structural engineers to look into the potential of local material that is highly abundant in the country and reimagine what it means to build. Let us prove that resilience, sustainability, and innovation can be designed into every structure, starting with bamboo.”
The publication of the guidelines will also be supported by the upcoming in-person training on October 24, which will be facilitated by Dr. Garciano and BASE resident experts who are behind the development of the guidelines.
Beyond the launch, BASE also organized a series of activities throughout National Bamboo Month to engage stakeholders, communities, and the public. On September 17, the BASE Innovation Center held an Open House to showcase ongoing research and technologies advancing bamboo innovation. This was followed by an educational tour in Batangas on September 18, coinciding with World Bamboo Day, where participants visited project sites to witness real-life applications of CBFT and gain insights from on-the-ground experiences. BASE also conducted a two-day Bamboo Construction Workshop on September 26 and 27 in partnership with the Kawayan Collective Agricultural Development Cooperative, providing participants with hands-on training and practical skills in bamboo construction.
With CBFT, BASE is proving that sustainable and reliable construction materials is becoming more accessible and standardized. By redefining how we build, BASE is setting the standard for sustainable and future-ready housing in the Philippines and beyond.
