Organized as part of the big celebration of the 45th anniversary of the dialogue relations, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union (EU) are leveraging the academic excellence and diversity from the two continents in the ASEAN-EU Higher Education Fair (AEHEF), to be held virtually on Saturday 6 August 2022.
Higher education plays a vital role in the post COVID-19 recovery and the efforts to address the evolving challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, digital transformation, or aging population. Underscoring the ASEAN-EU joint vision and a firm commitment to strategically drive higher education towards a greener and sustainable future, the upcoming AEHEF will feature more than 120 leading universities from both Southeast Asia and Europe. Other partners and programmes who will also participate include the ASEAN University Networks (AUN), Erasmus+, EURAXESS ASEAN, the Global Campus of Human Rights Asia Pacific (APMA) and SHARE.
The AEHEF will highlight the ASEAN’s and EU’s common strength – richness in diversity, while enabling the participants to benefit from both regions’ accumulative assets of academic excellence, educational programmes, scholarships, and mobility opportunities.
“ASEAN Secretariat is proud to do this event’s collaboration with the EU as it aligns with the recent launch of the Roadmap on the ASEAN Higher Education Space 2025 and Its Implementation Plan. We envision a resilient and sustainable ASEAN Higher Education Space that enables greater harmonisation and internationalisation of the region’s higher education systems,” said by Ms Rodora T. Babaran, Director Human Development, ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Department, ASEAN Secretariat
Ms. Elizabeth Te, Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., Permanent Mission of the Philippines to ASEAN, also Country Coordinator for ASEAN-EU Dialogue Relations emphasised, “We sincerely thank the EU for its commitment to strengthen and support higher education in ASEAN and its contribution towards ASEAN Community building. We encourage our dear students and the youth to seek learning and training opportunities either in ASEAN or in EU member states. Studying abroad broadens our perspectives, and changes the way we view the world. Former South African President Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” We invite you, our future leaders, to deepen your knowledge to make our world a better place.”
H.E. Igor Driesmans, EU Ambassador to ASEAN said, “The year of 2022 is indeed very special to all of us. The European Commission designated 2022 as the European Year of Youth. This year we are also commemorating the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus programme, EU funded programme in higher education and 45th Anniversary of EU-ASEAN Dialogue Relation. Higher education and students have always been an important element in our relationship with ASEAN. They play essential roles in the future of our two regions. Through this virtual higher education fair, we have been able to spread the word on EU and ASEAN study opportunities to an even wider and diverse range of students and academics from across ASEAN.”
In ASEAN, education plays a crucial role in promoting regional integration, sustainable development, and prosperity. The AEHEF will contribute to ASEAN’s efforts to promote educational equality, access to higher education, and intra-regional mobility among students and researchers. It will also demonstrate ASEAN’s strategy in making education relevant and effective for all citizens through various cooperation initiatives.
The ASEAN-EU Higher Education Fair 2022 will be held virtually on Saturday, 6 August 2022, from 09.30-18.00 (GMT+7). The fair will serve as one of the biggest gateways to higher education and academic career development opportunities in Europe and Southeast Asia for students, researchers, and academic institutions.
Many of the exhibitors are leading universities in their respective countries, such as Ecole Ferrieres – Hospitality, Gastronomy, and Luxury (France), Institut Teknologi Bandung (Indonesia), National University of Singapore (NUS), University of Groningen (Netherlands), University College Dublin, University of Sopron, University of Latvia and Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM). At least 3,000 participants will gain first-handed information on various academic and scholarship programmes as well as insights on successful applications, through 18 online discussions. Furthermore, the participants will have the opportunity to interact with all the exhibitors through ‘live chat’ channel of the virtual fair.
