THREE new Palaro records in swimming have so far highlighted the action in the rain-drenched Palarong Pambansa 2023 in Marikina City.

As the weather conditions continued to bother Manila and most parts of Luzon, young athletes in this year’s biggest school-based National multi-event remained in full energy and enthusiasm to showcase their talents before fellow participants, parents, and members of the Palaro committee and local government personnel.

After two days of thrill at the Marikina swimming pool, the podium finishers led by the National Capital Region made up of Ivo Nikolai Enot, Jalil Sephraim Taguinod, Ivan Nicolas Radovan, and Hugh Antonio Parto broke the old mark in the 200m medley relay (1:51.18) set in 2018 in Ilocos Sur by Manila tankers.

The new NCR team registered 1:49.47  to clinch the gold, while silver winners Western Visayas (Jennuel Booh De Leon, Lance Magno, Nathan Buncio, and Earl Jude Castor) finished at 1:50.15 and bronze medalist Davao Region (Neil Joaquin Tebar, Francis Greg Espiritu, Paolo Miguel Labanon and Rain Andrei Tumulac) checked in at 1:51.09.

In the secondary girls, Quendy Fernandez of Southern Tagalog claimed the gold in the 100m backstroke in a new record of 1:06.35. She broke the old mark of 1:06.58 set in 2018 by Samantha Therese Coronel.

Grade 9 student Krystal Ava David was named as the 2023 Palaro first record holder when she dominated the field in the elementary girls’ 100m breaststroke in one minute and 17.98 seconds. The old mark was set in the 2013 edition in Dumaguete City (1:19.35) by Raisa Regatta Gavino of NCR.
